Live and Move and Exeter Leisure have been working together to provide opportunities for NHS staff to be active.
The programme came about when Jack Phillips from the Devon Partnership NHS Trust, and a colleague, attended an open evening at Exeter’s newest leisure centre, St Sidwell’s Point. They had also seen the recent ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, run by Live and Move and Exeter Leisure, providing 12 weeks of a variety of free activity sessions into the community, to women who wouldn’t usually be able to prioritise physical activity classes.
They knew all about the benefits of moving more and how it can contribute towards people’s wellbeing, and wondered whether help might be available to support their NHS colleagues, who often find it difficult to keep active due to unusual and irregular shift patterns.
Live and Move worked with Exeter Leisure to provide a variety of opportunities which included swimming, yoga, football, racket sports, running, gym and workshops focusing on stress management and healthy eating.
Jack says: “The partnership with Exeter Leisure and Live and Move has come as a breath of fresh air for NHS staff. We have had amazing feedback from staff members attending and utilising the offer.
“Not only have they found the facilities fantastic, but the welcoming staff have really put people that have never tried a fitness class or gym at ease and given them confidence to ask for advice.”
He added: “Providing team sports was a perfect way to reintegrate staff that have been working from home and develop an avenue to reduce social isolation. We are ever so grateful and hope to continue the partnership going forward.”
Here at Live and Move, we are evaluating the success of this project and are looking at ways to support other workplaces to enable their staff to be active.
Live and Move’s vision is that Exeter and Cranbrook are places that everyone can have an active lifestyle, everyday. To find out more about what we are doing, visit the Active Projects page on our website or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
