Moving indoors

It’s safe to assume that we’re approaching the time of year where motivation levels tend to drop, and with the cold weather on its way it can be easy to go off the idea of being active. Whilst we would like to think we all remain active all year around, we are all-too aware that those resolutions you made earlier in the year might not be quite so appealing now, and the dark evenings and chillier temperatures can make it difficult for us to stay motivated.

But there are heaps of reasons why moving more, especially at this time of year, is really important for our physical and mental health. If you’re somebody who feels the cold, getting your heart pumping will help with circulation and warm up your whole body.  Moving more can also boost your immune system and could help you to avoid some of those winter bugs. And it can also put a smile on your face, by releasing ‘happy hormones’ .

If moving outdoors still doesn’t really take your fancy, take a look at our list of things to do that will get you moving without even leaving the house.

  1. A YouTube workout

Remember our lockdown saviours, Joe Wicks and Les Mills? At-home workouts are one thing that don’t need to stay in 2020 – these free videos and resources, and many more, are available online for anyone to use. Doing a few workouts each week will make a huge difference, and the great thing is that you don’t need equipment and you don’t need to leave the comfort of your living room.

  • Play music

Instead of putting the TV on when you get home from work or school, how about playing some music? With your favourite songs in the background, you can get on with some jobs or have a dance, and you can’t fail to raise a smile whilst doing so!

  • Tidying the house

This might not be the most exciting way to move more, but using a small bit of time to get cleaning or tidying the house means that you’re moving and ticking jobs off at the same time! What’s not to love? Step it up a bit by racing a timer or challenging yourself to complete chores extra quickly and you can’t go wrong.

  • Playing family games

Do you remember playing Twister as a child? Or how about charades or even hide and seek? Have a quick game with the family and feel that heart pumping in the process!

  • Keep exercise equipment out

This might seem a really obvious thing to say but if you leave any exercise equipment that you have out and proudly on display, you’re far more likely to use it! Whether it’s a yoga mat, weights or a pair of trainers, making sure that you can see it means that you’re far more likely to use it.
