Move for Free
Where to Start?
If you’re one of the many people who would like to move more but are not sure where to start, it’s often a good idea to start close to home, in your own community.
Here is our guide to some of the free opportunities taking place right here in Exeter and the surrounding area:
Exeter’s Green Circle route is another fabulous option on the doorstep and the perfect opportunity to catch up with a friend for a walk. This 12-mile route (which doesn’t all need to be done at once!) takes in the five valley parks within the boundaries of the city. Live and Move are working with partners on refreshing parts of the route and mapping smaller walks – keep an eye on our website and social media to find out more.
If you’re keen to escape city life, you could do worse than heading to Haldon Hill. Here you’ll find activities on offer from Active Devon, including specialist fitness groups for the over 55s including Pilates, Nordic walking and cycling. These all take part within the stunning Haldon Forest Park, a 3,500-acre forest site with views across Exeter.
If getting the heart rate going in your local park or tennis court isn’t your thing then how about meeting others for a walk? Stepping Out is an Exeter based group that organises walks aimed at those recovering from illness or injury, or a period of inactivity (like lockdown). Walks take place in various locations each week, and last from 30 – 90 minutes. Stepping Out caters for varying levels of physical ability and fitness, so there really is something for everybody.
