Merrivale Summer Activities Report – Summer 2023

Jun 14, 2024

Last summer, Live and Move, together with local partners, hosted a variety of activities in Merrivale Park in Exwick.

Initially, the local community had expressed an interest in running Park Yoga sessions in the park, however discussions between Live and Move, the Community Builder, Community Physical Activity Organiser and the local community suggested there was a need for a wider range of activities there.

The project trialled a plethora of activities over the six-week period. This included two football-based activities run by both Exeter City Community Trust and Football Fun Factory for children aged 2-15 years old. There were also fitness and wellbeing sessions for those over 65 years, Gentle Mindful Movement sessions and Body Conditioning both for those over 14. The sessions were capped off with a community celebration day which provided a number of fun activities for local families, as well as further information about other physical activities within the local area.

It was discovered that many people appreciated the fact that the sessions were free, given that similar offerings elsewhere had a cost, amplified further by the current cost of living crisis. Due to this, the turnout of local people was fantastic, giving the sessions a real community feel. One participant said, “It definitely created a bit more of a community feel and buzz. You saw the same people each week going to the football and saying hello.”

Our external evaluators have written an in-depth report about our work at Merrivale. Please do read the report if you’d like to find out more about these activities. It’s an achievement we’re really proud of and was a great learning experience for all involved. And the best news is, similar activities will be taking place this summer in Merrivale Park too.

Don't miss out.
