Live and Move
Who are we?
We are the Exeter and Cranbrook Sport England Local Delivery Pilot and we are made up of organisations, team members and community workers from across Exeter and Cranbrook.
In 2017, Sport England announced 12 ‘Local Delivery Pilot’ areas across the nation. They realised that a lot of their work towards making our nation more active was really successful, but that it was mostly encouraging people who were already quite active to do even more.
That’s a great achievement, but it’s not going to improve the wider wellbeing of our whole community. So the question we’re asking is: how can people who have barriers to being active find ways to move more in their lifestyles, in ways that suit them and are enjoyable enough to carry on long term?
You’ll see throughout this website that we tell stories about the projects and activities that our team at Live and Move are working on, but you’ll also see stories from people in our community.
Our idea is: listen to people to find out what they’re already doing to be more active, find out what they’d like to do, share stories and inspiration, and see where that takes us…
So please, if you have a story to tell or you get inspired by one of the stories you see on our website or social media in the coming months, let us know!
Tell us your story…
Live and Move
Why is it important?
Movement is so important to our wellbeing, both as individuals and as a community. Increasing our daily physical activity, bit by bit, in ways that work for us, has the potential to drastically improve our physical and mental health. It’s also a way to gain confidence, socialise (if that’s what you want) and get to know ourselves and each other.
We’ve all been going through some very challenging times since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. England’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Chris Whitty, told the nation very clearly:
“There is no situation, there is no age and no condition where exercise is not a good thing”.
What are we doing about it?
At Live and Move we have been working with Exeter and Cranbrook communities and listening to people here for some time now. We know that ‘exercise’ or ‘physical activity’ can mean very different things to different people. This is why we aren’t spreading generic messages like ‘get 10,000 steps a day’ or ‘join a local sports club’. These are great goals but they aren’t possible for everyone and also may not be everyone’s idea of fun. We want to work WITH people to find out what positive changes are realistic and enjoyable for them, then we come up with the plans to make these changes possible.
Live and Move are working with communities and organisations from the city and town councils all the way up to individual people. We look at the broad picture and the intricate details that can teach us how to make this social change for a more active future successful.
We have projects across many different areas and are always interested to hear from you about your ideas.
