Along with our friends at Inclusive Exeter and Sport England, we’ve kicked off a summer of free physical and sports activities at venues across Exeter to help encourage people to be more active. The sessions, which include walking and badminton, are being run by ethnic minority-based community groups and associations, helping reach people who may struggle to access them normally because of social and language barriers.

And it turns out we’re not just catching the attention of the local community – but people in Bangladesh too! While the launch event at Wonford Sports Centre was healthily attended by over 120 people, the sessions have travelled across the world, and have been featured on a national TV channel in Bangladesh! And it’s unsurprising, because they’re a great example of how a community can rally together to boost each other’s physical and mental wellbeing by embracing all backgrounds and abilities.

So what’s on offer?

Park walks

The wellbeing park walks are hour-long and are a gentle way for people to stretch their legs, soak up the fresh air and meet new people. Between 10-15 people join the walking group each week, and more regular park walks will soon be setting off from Wonford and St Thomas.

At Live and Move, we believe that everyone, no matter their circumstance, should be able to get involved in physical activities in a supportive and safe way. That’s why Exeter is fast becoming one of the most inclusive and active cities in the UK because of free, accessible programmes just like these.

Have you been to any of the activities? We’d love to know. Post on social, don’t forget to tag us and use the hashtag #ShareYourMoves.
