Cllr Duncan Wood’s 12 Moves in 12 Months: Yoga

Exeter City Councillor Duncan Wood has committed to his year-long 12 Moves in 12 Months challenge to get more active by attending his first ever yoga session in Pinhoe this week. 

Duncan attended the first of his weekly sessions run by Kate Furler at the Pinhoe United Reformed Church in Exeter and loved his experience!

He said: “Yoga is a brilliant way to start this challenge. The first session went really well. It is a great way to start the day.

“There were different exercises that I felt very comfortable with, some stretched me a bit and I thought I could probably improve on. Some I thought I could do but when I started, but I soon realised I couldn’t!” 

This is all part of Duncan’s challenge to undertake 12 Moves in 12 Months. He’s trying out a new activity each month during 2022, whilst also celebrating some of the incredible community groups and organisations in Exeter helping us all to be more active in our daily lives.

There isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ solution to getting active, and when being active is one of the top ways to increase our overall wellbeing, it’s really valuable to find out what we enjoy for ourselves and what improves our daily lives. Duncan said that he is looking forward to trying lots of new activities, perhaps making some new friends along the way – all with the aim of getting active throughout the year and finding out what’s available for local people.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to 12 Moves in 12 Months. I’m going to try out 12 new experiences for me, 12 ways of getting active which are welcoming and open to anyone who has done nothing before – they are activities people might want to try in their own communities.”

Yoga instructor Katie Furler said: “Cllr Wood was a great asset to our group and I am looking forward to having him at our classes for the next few weeks. He said he enjoyed it and felt energised, which was really good to hear because that is exactly what I want, especially from a morning class.

“I am really passionate about the benefits of yoga – it is great for both our physical and mental health. I would recommend that people find a class that is accessible and enjoyable for them to make sure they get the most out of it.”
